Many people are familiar with the situation when the computer freezes, programs load very slowly or do not respond at all to user actions. The most common reason for this is the large number of junk files that take up most of the hard drive space. In this article, we will look at various ways to clean your computer of junk and unnecessary files, which will help restore the system to its previous speed.

Standard Windows Tools

The Windows operating system has several standard features that will help you get rid of junk and unnecessary files. Let's consider each of them in detail.

Disk Cleanup utility

The function is designed to remove temporary and other unnecessary system files. For this:
To free up as much space on your hard drive as possible, you can delete unnecessary system files. To do this, click on "Clean up system files". The utility will restart, analyze again, and two new items will appear in the list: “Service Pack Backup Files” and “Windows Update Cleanup”.

Clearing temporary files in the temp folder

To clean your computer of unnecessary files, you also need to delete the contents from the temp folder - it contains temporary files of various programs. You can get to the ass with the "Run" command. First, press the keyboard shortcut Win+R, after which we enter in the line %temp%.

After clicking the "OK" button, Explorer will open, where all the contents of this folder must be selected (Ctrl + A) and deleted (Shift + Del).

You can also find this folder through the explorer. To do this, open system drive C, go to Windows folder, then find Temp. In some cases, it may be hidden, so you must first enable the "show hidden files" option.

It must be remembered that not all temporary files will be deleted in the folder, but only those that are not involved in the programs. Therefore, before cleaning, it is recommended to close all running programs so that you can delete all files.

Deep cleaning

You can perform deep cleaning of system files using the command line. For this:

Clearing the Downloads Folder

Windows has a special folder for downloading programs and files from the Internet. To free up more space and increase the performance of your computer, it also needs to be cleaned from time to time. Since there may be files that the user needs, they must first be copied to another folder on the hard drive. To clear the Downloads folder, follow these steps:
Thus, you can free up to several tens, and in some cases hundreds of gigabytes of memory.

We also recommend disabling auto-loading of unnecessary or slow-down software products. To do this, simultaneously press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, go to "Task Manager" - "Startup". Select applications that you do not need at system startup and disable.

Third party software products

To clean your computer from unnecessary files, you can also use third-party software. The choice of such utilities is very large, many have paid and free versions. For home use, the functionality that is presented in the free version is quite enough.

Use such utilities with caution, as there is a risk of erasing important information. Therefore, only sections that do not contain important information should be selected for cleaning.

Dism++

With this program, you can clean your computer of junk, remove unnecessary programs, configure startup, optimize the system, and much more. The program is completely free. To clean up junk files:

Cleaning your computer regularly will keep your computer running at high speed. These procedures are recommended to be carried out once a month and a half, so that the computer is always in good condition.

Everyone once faced such a problem when the computer starts to freeze, and files are downloaded very slowly. And in most cases, people simply forget to clean their computer of junk. The size of hard drives on modern PCs can reach several terabytes, but someday the free space still runs out.

What are junk files?

Unnecessary files on your computer are movies, videos or games that you have not been interested in for a long time, but you just forgot to delete them. Some files, after using the uninstall utility built into them, leave memory about themselves and, as a result, turn into a pile of rubbish. The task of cleaning a computer and even more so a laptop from unnecessary programs and files is always relevant for any user. All sorts of optimizers can break the integrity of Windows. We will list you the actions that will free up space and are guaranteed not to lead to incorrect operation of the operating system.

Cleaning up temporary files with a system cleaner

Windows developers have provided an excellent tool for deleting optional files - a cleaning manager integrated into the operating system. To run it, press the combination "Win" + "R", enter the cleanmgr value and click "OK". After that, the application will analyze the system and display a list of data available for deletion, as well as the planned amount of freed space. By the way, this manager will even cope with the upgrade to Windows 10 loaded in the background. And this is as much as three Gigabytes.

Emptying the Recycle Bin

A banal tool, but very effective - removing garbage from the Recycle Bin. We have met users with Gigabytes of unnecessary data placed there long ago. Don't forget to check the contents of the container and empty it with the "Empty Trash" command.

Disabling hibernation

A convenient mode for a quick start of the computer. It is especially active on laptops. When using it, the entire contents of RAM is written to the local disk in the hiberfil.sys file. Most likely, it will not work to delete it simply by pressing the "Delete" key. The solution is to disable the mode through the command line.
To do this, press the combination “Win” + “R” already familiar to us, copy or enter the text “powercfg -h off” in it and click “OK”. You can turn this mode back on simply by changing the text "off" to "on".

Cleaning up user files

We recommend checking and deleting unused user accounts. They are located in the "Control Panel", item "User Accounts". Here you should also disable the guest account of the operating system.

After restarting the computer, you can "clean up" the remnants of the folders. By default, they are located on the system media in the root folder "Users".

Removing temporary objects from the browser cache

Auxiliary program files are located in the "Temp" folders located in the following locations:

  • C:\Users\(user_account_folder)\AppData\Local\Temp
  • C:\Users\All Users\Temp
  • C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Temp
  • C:\Windows\Temp
  • C:\Users\All Users\Temp
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\History
  • C:\Windows\Temp
  • C:\Documents and Settings\(user_account_folder)\Local Settings\History
  • C:\Documents and Settings\(user_account_folder)\ Local Settings\Temp

Internet browsers like to "store" various information that they need to launch certain functions faster or simplify the authorization algorithm. If these two factors are not critical for you, you can safely delete cache files.

We list the locations for popular browsers:

Opera
C:\users\(user_account_folder)\AppData\Local\Opera\Opera\cache\

Mozilla Firefox
C:\Users\( )\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Google Chrome
C:\Users\(user_account_folder)\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cache and C:\Users\(user_account_folder)\AppData\Local\Bromium\User Data\Default\Cache

Internet Explorer
C:\Users\(user_account_folder)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\

Of course, you can do all these manipulations through the menu of the web browser itself, but the forced cleaning tool is the most reliable.

Local copies of recently opened office documents can also be deleted. They are located at
C:\Users\(user_account_folder)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\

It is possible that not all directories will be available for cleaning. The reason for this is that some software is accessing the folder at that moment. If the situation does not change immediately after starting the operating system, try deleting data in safe mode. To do this, when loading the operating system, press the "F8" key and select the "Safe Mode" item in the list provided.

Clearing game saves

Recently, games to save user data are increasingly using not their own directory, but a separate folder in the "Documents". Finding these objects is very simple - we follow the path "Computer" - "Documents" and find the name of the directories in which the name of the games you deleted or do not need occurs. We check that they do not contain data that is useful to you and remove garbage. Catalogs of current games, of course, do not touch.

Please note that if you have previously installed various multimedia software or graphic editors, then you should also check folders with the name of unused programs - these applications also like to leave garbage in documents.

Reducing the swap file size

If the availability of free space is critical to you, try forcibly limiting the size of the local file, which is used in case of a lack of RAM. You can limit its size in the "Control Panel", the "System" section, the "Advanced Options" tab. Then, in the "Performance" item, select the "Advanced" attachment. However, we recommend that you do not make the file size smaller than 500 MB, especially on machines with little RAM. There is a risk of encountering "brakes" during work.

Content

For the past 10 years, the PC has been not a luxury, but a vital necessity. More and more services are moving to work via the Internet and a person has to master this device. Over time, a certain number of files accumulate on the computer, which are no longer used by the system or a person, but take up space and complicate the work of the PC. To avoid various freezes and loadings, you need to regularly clean your system.

Why you need to clean your computer from "garbage"

Modern PCs are equipped with huge hard drives, but even they become full at some point and you have to start deleting unnecessary files. Cleaning your computer of garbage is a mandatory procedure for both home and work computers, because they interfere with the normal operation of the machine, slow down the search on the hard drive. The main difficulty of the removal process is not to erase important system records, but only garbage.

Most of the unnecessary documents appear when installing programs, games, the PC starts to load the system more slowly, open windows. Some software generally automatically installs additional utilities into the system if an inexperienced user forgot to uncheck the boxes during installation. All this leads to a deterioration in the performance of the computer. When the hard disk is critically full, a special window will appear, which indicates the need to free up disk space. There are the following positive aspects of regular cleaning of unnecessary files:

  • PC work will be much faster;
  • you have more space for important documents and files;
  • programs open, the system will boot faster;
  • there is less risk that a critical error will occur that will close the application or game at the wrong time.

Cleaning methods

To clean the system, it is not necessary to manually search for each file and delete it through the trash. There are special tools that automate the process and require minimal user intervention. Cleaning your computer of unnecessary files can be carried out using a system function, it is located in the properties of the hard drive itself. The second way is to install special software that was developed specifically for this purpose, for example, Ccleaner, Uninstall Expert.

How to clean your computer from unnecessary files

Most of the "garbage" is collected due to the reluctance of a person to get rid of files that he no longer needs. Someone downloaded the series, watched it and left it lying on the disk. Any user who knows how to move from folder to folder and remembers what he downloaded or installed recently can manually clean the computer from garbage. Most importantly, do not delete anything from the Windows or Program Files folder on your system drive. To clean them from unnecessary files, it is better to use special utilities.

Remove junk from desktop

Over time, a huge number of labels and documents accumulate on the screen, which are no longer needed and only create chaos. This will not directly affect the operation of the system, but it will make it easier for you to find the necessary applications. Just highlight the files you don't need and drag them to the trash. If you accidentally put something you need there, then you can restore this document. When all the excess is sent to the basket, do not forget to empty it. Right click on it and select cleanup.

Torrents and junk videos

The second place in terms of memory on a PC is occupied by video files (the first is modern games). Most users after watching a series or movie forget to delete them. Depending on the quality of the picture, such a file can take from 700 megabytes to 30 gigabytes. To clean your computer from movies and eliminate the lack of space, you need to:

  • go to the folder with the file;
  • select it with the left mouse button;
  • hold down the Shift button and press Del;
  • the movie will be permanently deleted.

Services that distribute free movies use the torrent system, i.e. the download speed depends on the number of people who have already downloaded it and left it on the distribution. A very convenient system that saves you from breaking the connection when downloading, allows you to pause this process. Over time, you accumulate a large number of these torrent files that can be deleted. You can find them by a prominent green icon with the logo of the Torrent program. You can safely take them down.

Extra bookmarks in the browser

All modern programs for surfing the Internet support the function of saving interesting pages. They are called "bookmarks" and can be located in special folders in the browser itself or directly on the quick access panel. If you do not clean up unnecessary links, then the program may start to “stupid” and load windows for a long time. For cleaning you need:

  • move the mouse pointer over an unnecessary bookmark;
  • right-click;
  • select "delete bookmark".

Unused programs

It will be extremely difficult for a person to check all folders for unnecessary files and clean them. For this, special utilities have been created that scan the contents of the hard drive themselves and determine the oldest, little-used files that can be cleaned. There is a Disk Cleanup utility built into Windows, but you can also use more advanced applications, for example, Ccleaner, Revo uninstaller. The program will collect all obsolete files, registry entries and prompt you to delete them. You can do everything automatically or manually.

Finding duplicates and removing them

The operating system and some programs sometimes create copies of files for certain operations, but then they are not deleted. This data clogs your PC, can negatively affect the operation of the OS, so it should be cleaned. For these purposes, the Ccleaner application is well suited. Download and install the program, run from the shortcut on the desktop. The procedure is carried out as follows:

  1. In the left menu of the interface, you need to select the "Service" item.
  2. Next, in the adjacent list, select "Search for duplicates."
  3. You should set the search criteria for junk files. If you do not know them, then it is recommended to simply enable all 4 checkboxes.
  4. Be sure to check the box next to the "System" line so that the program does not accidentally delete important data from Windows.
  5. If a folder contains important files, then it can be added in the "Exceptions" tab.
  6. Next, click on "Search", the results will be displayed in alphabetical order.
  7. Select the files you want to delete and click "Delete Selected".

One of the disks was selected for installation of the operating system on it. It is called system, the more rubbish, garbage or suddenly a virus on it, the worse your Windows will work. Regular cleaning will ensure stable operation of the system, speed it up, so you should "clean" regularly, as a rule, this is a volume called "C". It should always have a reserve of memory, if suddenly some programs create temporary documents for their work. At the moment, at least 20 GB of free space is considered optimal.

Deleting residual files on a computer with a TEMP extension

The system to speed up the loading of programs, files, pages in the browser (Chrome, Opera, Yandex) creates temporary documents, remembers some data. Over time, a lot of them can accumulate, and they will take up disk space. You can clean them yourself in the Windows folder, then Temp and just use the Shift + Del combination to destroy everything without regret. Another option is Ccleaner. She will do everything for you automatically, you need:

  1. Download and install the utility.
  2. In the left menu, select the "Analysis" item and run it.
  3. The application itself will collect all the data, analyze the contents of the folders, you only need to check them (suddenly something important accidentally got into the list).
  4. Confirm the cleanup of unnecessary documents.

Disk cleanup using standard windows tools

The developers of the operating system knew that “garbage” would accumulate on the computer over time, so they created a native function for deleting unnecessary files. To clean the disk you need to do the following:

  1. Go to "My Computer" or open File Explorer.
  2. Right click on the desired disk.
  3. In the context menu, click on "Properties".
  4. In this window, at the bottom right, there will be a "disk cleanup" section.
  5. A window will appear in which you can select additional deletion options.
  6. Then click "OK" and Windows itself will delete the files. It can destroy temporary documents, data from the Internet, the cache of the Chrome browser, Mozilla, and, if necessary, system documents.

How to delete temporary files after system update

For Windows, add-ons are regularly released that are installed on top of existing files. To do this, backups are created in a special folder, which then become useless and only clog the disk. To properly clean these files, you can use the PatchCleaner utility. It helps to detect unused junk documents called orphaned.

The application sends a request to the system and receives a response, which of the data is used, compares with the data from the Installer folder and determines the inactive items. Before use, it is recommended to create a restore point so that in case of a work error, you can return all deleted documents. You just need to run the application, then click the "Delete" button and all unnecessary system update files will be destroyed.

Removing junk from the windows registry

Important parameters of Windows are stored in the registry, it is responsible for the adequate operation of many programs. It is difficult to clean it yourself, not every user will be able to determine which of these entries is unnecessary and which is important. For these purposes, it is better to use the Ccleaner program. She will be able to conduct a deep analysis of the data and identify files that are duplicate registry entries, broken pieces, and simply outdated. Before cleaning, it is recommended to create an OS restore point. You need:

  1. Launch Ccleaner and click on the "Registry" section.
  2. Then click the "Find problems" button.
  3. Next, a list of damaged or unnecessary documents will appear.
  4. Click the "Fix Selected" button. The system will prompt you to back up the registry and it is recommended that you perform this procedure. In the event of a malfunction of Windows, it will be possible to restore the lost registry entries.

How to clear Startup from unnecessary programs

The newly installed operating system will boot quickly without problems. Over time, the user installs additional software, which begins to load automatically along with the OS, slowing it down. Not all of these utilities you really need, so you can disable them and run them manually if necessary. You can clean the startup yourself or with the help of special utilities. If you chose the first option, then you need to follow these steps:

  1. Press the key combination win+R.
  2. A command prompt will open, in which you need to write "msconfig" (without quotes).
  3. In the top menu, select the "Startup" tab.
  4. The list will be long and some names are incomprehensible to you, but some can be turned off intuitively, for example, agent programs from various services, players for playing videos, music, etc.

For users of Windows version 8 and above, the developers have simplified this task. The key combination Ctrl+alt+del opens a menu in which you need to select "task manager". In the top menu, a tab called "Startup" is immediately available, where you can disable all unnecessary applications. You can also see a list of these applications and disable them through the Ccleaner utility. Click on the "Service" section and in the additional list go to "Startup". There, too, you can clean all unnecessary applications.

Checking your computer with an antivirus program

Malware is a serious threat to any computer. Viruses are not so easy to clean, so you need to use special anti-virus programs. They can get onto a computer when installing suspicious utilities, along with hacked games, or through a browser. The most annoying are the "worms" that settle in your browser and open extra tabs for you, add various advertisements to the pages, ads of a bawdy or shocking nature.

You will not be able to manually clean your computer from viruses, so you should choose one of the products that will do it efficiently, without damaging the system. Among the paid options, Kaspersky Antivirus is very popular, and Malwarebyte for cleaning the browser and registry. These two utilities will automatically scan your computer and offer you to clean up all potentially dangerous documents. No additional action is required from you.

Before using a flash drive, cd-disk or dvd-disk (if someone else uses them), it is recommended to check the data with an antivirus. This will protect your computer from malware infiltration through these media. If you do not want to pay for Kaspersky, then you can find a free alternative. How to clean your computer from unnecessary files without investment and neutralize viruses:

  • Dr. Web;

Did you find an error in the text? Select it, press Ctrl + Enter and we'll fix it!

It is a well-known fact that with prolonged use of the operating system without reinstalling, its performance and operating speed drop significantly, and malfunctions more and more often manifest themselves. This is primarily due to the accumulation of “garbage” on the hard drive in the form of unnecessary files and errors in the registry, which very often occur when uninstalling programs and performing other actions. Let's see how you can clean up a Windows 7 PC from clogging elements and fix errors.

Clearing the system of "garbage" and fixing accumulated errors, like most other standard manipulations, can be done by two groups of methods: using third-party software or the built-in tools of Windows 7. Next, we will consider in detail the options for using both of these methods.

Method 1: Using Third Party Applications

First of all, let's consider how to achieve the solution of the tasks set in this article using third-party software. To clean the PC from "garbage" and fix errors, there are special applications - optimizers. The most popular among them among users is CCleaner. On his example, we will consider the algorithm of actions.

  1. To clean your PC from "garbage", run CCleaner and go to the section "Cleaning". In tabs Windows And "Applications" by checking and unchecking the checkboxes, specify which elements you want to process and which not. We strongly advise you to clear temporary files and browser cache. Set the rest of the settings to your liking. But if you are not very versed in them, you can leave the default checkbox positions. After that press "Analysis".
  2. The data analysis procedure will begin, during which the program will determine which objects are to be deleted, according to the settings you set earlier.
  3. After the analysis, CCleaner will display a list of items that will be cleaned and the amount of data to be deleted in them. Next click "Cleaning".
  4. A dialog box will open warning you that the files will be removed from your computer. To confirm your actions to delete data, click OK.
  5. The process of cleaning the system from "garbage" will start.
  6. At the end of it, unnecessary files will be erased, which will free up space on the hard drive and reduce the amount of information processed by the processor. In the window that opens, you can view the list of objects that have been cleared, as well as the total amount of deleted information.
  7. To correct errors, go to the section "Registry" CCleaner.
  8. In the block "Registry Integrity" you can uncheck those elements that you do not want to check for errors. But without the need, we do not recommend doing this, since the analysis will not be complete. Click on the button "Finding Problems".
  9. The search for errors in the registry will start. As they are detected, a list of faults is displayed in the program window.
  10. After the analysis is completed, a list of problems will be generated. If you do not consider any of the elements of this list a real mistake, then uncheck the box to the left of it. But such a need is quite rare. Next press the button "To correct…".
  11. A dialog box will open, prompting you to save a backup copy of your changes. We advise you to press the button "Yes"- if suddenly some entry from the registry is mistakenly deleted, you can always start the recovery. It is especially worth using this advice if you are not an advanced user, and at the previous stage did not have an understanding of what the items displayed in the list that will be deleted are responsible for.

  12. Will open "Conductor", with which you need to go to the directory of the hard drive or removable media where you intend to store the backup. If you wish, you can change its default name to any other in the field "File name", but it is not necessary to do so. Next click on the button "Save".
  13. In the next dialog box, click the button "Fix Marked".
  14. The repair procedure will be performed. After finishing it, press the button "Close".
  15. Returning to the main CCleaner window, click on the button again "Finding Problems".
  16. If no problems are found after re-analysis, then the registry is completely cleared of errors. If problematic elements are displayed again in the window, the cleaning procedure must be carried out until there are none at all, adhering to the algorithm of actions described above.

Method 2: Using System Tools

You can also clean your computer of "garbage" and remove errors from the registry using system tools.

  1. click "Start" and go to section "All programs".
  2. Open catalog "Standard".
  3. Next, go to the folder "Service".
  4. Find the name of the utility in this directory "Disk Cleanup" and click on it.

    You can run this cleaning application in a faster way, but then you have to remember one command. Dial Win+R and in the window that opens, type in the expression:

    Click the button OK.

  5. In the utility window that opens, select from the drop-down list "Disks" the letter of the partition you want to clear, and press OK.
  6. The utility will start the scanning procedure for the possibility of releasing from the "garbage" of the disk partition that was selected in the previous window. This process can take from a few minutes to half an hour or more, depending on the power of your computer, so be prepared to wait.
  7. After the scan is completed, a list of items available for deletion will be displayed in the window. Those that need to be freed from "garbage" are marked with a checkmark. The contents of some of them can be viewed by highlighting the corresponding element and clicking "View Files".
  8. After that in "Explorer" The directory corresponding to the selected item will open. You will be able to view its content and determine its importance. Based on this, you can decide whether to clean this directory or not.
  9. After you have checked the boxes next to the elements in the main window, to start the cleaning procedure, click OK.

    If you want to clean up not only ordinary directories, but also system folders from "garbage", click on the button "Clean up system files". Naturally, this function is available only when processing the partition on which the OS is installed.

  10. A window will open where you again need to select a drive. Since you need to clean up system files, select the exact partition on which the OS is installed.
  11. Next, an analysis of the possibility of freeing the disk from "garbage" will be launched, already taking into account system directories.
  12. After that, a list of items proposed for cleaning will be displayed. This time it will be longer than the previous one, since it also takes into account system directories, but most importantly, the total size of the deleted data will most likely also increase. That is, you can remove more unnecessary information. Check the boxes for those items that you think are reasonable to clear, and click OK.
  13. A window will open where you need to confirm the action by clicking on the button "Delete Files".
  14. The procedure for deleting "garbage" will start, during which all the items you have marked will be cleared of data.
  15. After the end of this process, unnecessary files will be erased, which will free up space on the HDD and help your computer run faster.
